Werner Faymann

Chancellor of Austria

Werner Faymann (born May 4, 1960 in Vienna, Austria) is the current Chancellor of Austria. He was Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology in the Cabinet of Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer. On June 16, 2008 Faymann replaced Gusenbauer as chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPA) and was elected its leading candidate in the snap legislative elections, to be held on September 28 this year and finally won by the SPA with a short majority. As head of the most voted party, Faymann was asked by Federal President Heinz Fischer to form the new Government on October 8, 2008, and sworn in on 2 December 2008.
